Egyptian Past

In the dubbed version of Yu-Gi-Oh!'s Ancient Egypt arc ("Dawn of the Duel"), we see Ishizu's past self introduced as Priestess Isis. Other than her style of dress (ancient Egyptian as opposed to modern Egyptian) and her social role (guardian of the pharaoh as opposed to guardian of the pharaoh's tomb), she does not seem very different from present-day Ishizu. She deeply reveres the pharaoh, and is relied upon by the rest of the group to give omens and warnings, much as an ancient Oracle would have, through the use of her Millennium Necklace. Sound familiar?

However, Isis is different in one way--she does not command the dueling mastery that her modern self does. During the fights between the guardians and Thief King Bakura, Isis is not able to conjure the Shadow Monsters necessary to defeat Akunadin's evil (but then again, neither can anyone else). Ishizu, by contrast, has mastered her dueling ability such that she almost defeats an Egyptian God (when she duels Kaiba in the Battle City Finals).

Perhaps Ishizu's spirit mastered dueling while floating about in the afterlife? Who knows? But whatever happened, it is surely the difference between the two versions of her character.
